Into The Brush is honored to be recognized as the local winner of Minnesota’s Touchstone Energy Community Award by Lake Country Power for its work with Stones Of Uplifting Light (SOUL) in providing emotional support for those who become unexpectedly terminally ill. SOUL operations in April of 2017 as a new program designed to share art on stone with people who are suddenly in the final stages of their life by working with an intermediary (family member, friend, acquaintance, etc) to find out some details about the afflicted individual and a more joyous time in that person’s past. Joe Baltich, lead SOUL artist, then paints that moment on stone and sends the art to the individual. No fees are charged for SOUL stones. Donations to Into The Brush are accepted but not required. SOUL recipients are generally not acquainted with SOUL artists and there is no contact between either party. SOUL founder and artist, Joe Baltich wanted SOUL to represent the kindness of strangers through sharing art. Although feedback has been non-existent (neither expected, encouraged, nor required) from SOUL recipients, Into The Brush has been gratified to hear through a few intermediaries that the various recipients were very moved by the gesture-in-stone-art and their families also very appreciative of the lasting mementos. A small, positive effect in a most difficult time is the goal all Into The Brush with SOUL. If you know somebody who is having a rough time and faced with harsh realities, Into The Brush encourages you to contact them at firstname.lastname@example.org
Into The Brush thanks Lake Country Power for their recognition of the SOUL program and is pleased to be a part of the Touchstone Energy Cooperatives!

This painting would make a great addition to any space at home or in the cabin.

Painting class by Into The Brush at Northwind Lodge leads to a fun time in the north woods of Minnesota! There’s a stone here waiting for you to put your name on it and we know how to help you do that. (It involves paint and a willingness to have fun.)
Painting class at Northwind Lodge, Ely, MN
One Day Event – June 7, 2-6 PM – First Avenue East in Ely
Under A Wing art mentor students, Abbie and Lauren Rehbein, have both completed the required 52 classes in the Under A Wing Art Mentor program with Ely artist, Joe Baltich. That’s a commitment to a minimum of 104 hours painting time in class. It does not include their extra time spent attending local art shows, producing fine art for benevolent services such as Stones Of Uplifting Light and the very popular Ely Stone Stash event October 2019. Through their excellent dedication and skills, the artistic efforts of Abbie and Lauren have enriched Ely in fine art and festive community participation.
The final part of this phase of Under A Wing is the student art exhibit where all of their works are for sale. Under A Wing is about art entrepreneurship – learning how to make an income by applying one’s talents. We were supposed to rent a space to exhibit, but Covid 19 has disrupted that. Instead, we are going to do an outdoor exhibit. Please come to see it.
Hopefully the rain will hold off.
All works are for sale. Cash or checks only.
It was a fun class….well, they always are. Five painters surprised themselves with their successful works. The class was about painting reflections in water and it was definitely challenging to our participants, but the end result were 5 wallhangers. Check them out for yourself.
Into The Brush is an art program to teach people how to paint using our fabulously beautiful Boundary Waters wilderness as our subject. Lessons taught by Ely artist, Joe Baltich.
In appreciation for your checking us out, we’ll deduct 10% from the cost of all regular programming options except the Micro Art Classes (first-time students to Into The Brush) when you reserve. Just mention the promo code “Reduce your Stress” at the time of reservation.
Mobile Paint Party was at Eagle’s Nest. I would say fun was had by all and many pretty rocks are now among us. Thank you ladies for such a fun time painting – and the delicious lunch! — Eagles Nest, Minnesota. We come to you!

Pagami – 16×20 acrylic on canvas by Joe Baltich.
The Pagami creek fire burned 110,000 acres of the BWCA and was so hot it spread 16 miles in 4 days. Ground zero was a lightning strike located on Pagami creek only about 1.5 miles southeast of my studio and resort. We weren’t entirely sure if we would have to escape with the clothes on our backs if the wind changed suddenly. Over 600 firefighters fought it for months. The day of the big wind, when the fire hit a large blow-down section from a prior storm 10 years earlier, the cloud of smoke and steam rose to 40,000 feet in about 15 minutes. Then that cloud blew all the way to Milwaukee, WI, causing a blackout and major concern. One of our vendors called from Milwaukee to see if we were still OK. NEVER want to do that again!
You, too and learn to paint in our art program here at Into The Brush! Stay in your own housekeeping cabin, paint with Joe, go fishing on your own right on Jasper Lake, live among the trees and next to a babbling brook. It’s is one of the greatest art experiences you could have and you don’t need to know how to paint. Three different programs to choose. Stay for the week, take a short program or a longer one.
